There is an interest
in this book because Raewyn Connell is writing from the perspective
of Australia – outside the UK – but in reality one step removed
from the Anglo-America pattern of High Education.
However overall this
intervention adds little to our understanding of the purpose of
“higher” education or the effective organisation and delivery of
that activity. The interface of enhancing academic knowledge (either
through teaching or research) and institutionally finance management
is not an easy one – but if we look closely enough the fierce
debates within mediaeval colleges were probably about matters
pertaining to financial management rather than academic knowledge –
it has been ever thus?
