A Lovely Way to Burn by Louise Welsh

One of the key challenges for this novel is in the ten years since it was published we have had a global pandemic – and for all the hardships that we endured through lockdown after lockdown we never went to the dystopian place that is Louise Welsh’s backdrop. Indeed this summer’s riots probably have more in common with the context Welsh places this story within than COVID.


But I also found that something odd with Stevie Flint, a presenter on a shopping channel, a character that I think had just walked off set from Tales of the City, just picking up guns and shooting people.


I never got to a space in which I suspended my disbelief...
